Swim Teams Poised For Landmark Conference Championships

February 11, 2009

WASHINGTON-- Even though spring is just beginning to creep into the air and summer is still a long way off, at CUA the pool has been open and the swimmers have been putting in countless hours in preparation for this weekend's Landmark Conference Championship meet at USMMA.

In 2008, the Cardinals finished in second place on the women's side and third for the men.  The CUA women finished with 254 points, behind only Scranton who ended the three day meet with 406.50 points, while the men finished with 205 points, behind USMMA (1st, 474 pts.) and Susquehanna (2nd, 379 pts.).

Before the 2008-09 season the Cardinal women were picked to finish in second place while the men were picked fourth by the coaches and sports information directors of the conference.

For the CUA women, they will look to the leadership of returning individual champion, Lisa Brooks (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), who finished first in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke during last year's conference meet.  Brooks also holds the best conference time for the 100 yard breaststroke this year.

Helene Nicolletti (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield), who finished with a time of 56.12 in the 100 yard freestyle last year, will return to the pool for the Cardinals looking to improve on her 2008 performance and gain an individual title.

CUA is also defending the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay crowns captured last year.  The team looks to remain strong in these two races.

On the men's side, CUA will return Brian Jones (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) who took home the 500 yard freestyle title last season and Sean Murphy (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) who finished second in the 100 yard butterfly.  The men's 200 freestyle relay finished with a time of 1:29.74 last year, good enough for a third place finish.

When asked about the meet, CUA head coach Paul Waas said, "We are very excited to get to the USMMA pool and see what we can do.  This is the meet we have our sights set on all year, and I'm confident that we will not disappoint."

The 2009 Landmark Conference Championship meet will take place for the second straight year at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in King's Point, New York on February 13-15, 2009.  The three day event can be followed at http://www.besmarttinc.com/landmark/choice.htm.  Each day after the preliminaries finish, results will be posted (approx. 1 p.m.).  After that evening's finals are finished the results will again be posted on the website (approx. 9 p.m.).  For the latest information and recaps of the day's action check www.cuacardinals.com/sports/swim/index.
