Kings Point, N.Y.- The Catholic University Cardinals swimming teams are off to a solid start at the Landmark Conference Swim Championships. After completing a successful round of prelims in the morning, many CUA swimmers excelled in the finals. After day one, the University of Scranton women are in first place overall, with 199 points. Catholic is in second place with 96 points.

On the women's side, the relay teams once again led the charge for the Cardinals. The relay team of sophomore Mary Connelly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), freshman Brenna Foust (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), junior Helene Nicoletti (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield), and senior Krystal Dole (Corbin, Ky./Model) placed second in the 200 yard freestyle relay. After a thrilling race, their time of 1:42.84 came in just three tenths of a second shy of the win. The 400 yard medley relay team also finished second. Connelly, Foust, and Dole were joined by sophomore Lisa Brooks (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) to make up this team, whose finish earned 26 points for the Cardinals.

Many other Cardinals had superb opening days of swimming in the pool. In the 200 IM, Lisa Brooks' time of 2:16.15 earned her second place, as it was just behind a swimmer from Goucher. CUA swimmer Foust finished seventh place in this race. Krystal Dole's time of 25.78 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle earned her a fourth place finish. Also finishing in the top ten in this sprint was Mary Connelly. Juniors Katie Blemmings (Langhorne, Pa./Notre Dame) and Caitlyn Schettino (Babylon, N.Y./St. Anthony's) finished 9th and 10th in the 500 yard freestyle.

The men's team also had a good start to their quest for a high showing in this season-ending tournament.  They finished with 86 points, which places them in fourth place. After today's competition, the United States Merchan Marine Academy leads the men's competition. The relay team of Freshmen Brendan Reilly (Alexandria, VA./Bishop Ireton) andStephen Johnson (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional) and seniors Sean Connelly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Reik Foust (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) earned the men's top finish of the day. Their time of 1:29.01 earned them third place in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The 400 yard relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:40.70. This team consisted of Foust, junior Kevin Cravedi (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel), and sophomores Luke Miller (State College, Pa./State High) and Brian Jones (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) .

Individually for the Cardinals, the men's 500 yard freestyle featured four Cardinal swimmers finishing in the top ten. Brian Jones time of 4:53.96 earned him fourth place. Sophomore Brian Shelton finished seventh, Cravedi finished ninth, and sophomore John Caldwell (Thornwood, N.Y./Iona Prep) finished tenth.  In the 50 yard freestyle, Reik Foust's time of 22.09 earned him fourth place. Freshman Stephen Johnson also  finished ninth in the event.

The Cardinal swimmers will resume their fight for the Landmark Conference Title tomorrow. Prelimineries begin at 11:00 and finals will start at 6:00 P.M. The meet will conclude on Sunday.
