School records fall, two claim individual titles on day one

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Day one of the 2011 Landmark Conference swimming championships is in the books and it was one filled with strong performances for CUA.  Three school records fell and freshmen Joanna Ladas and Caleb Capozella both claimed individual championships.  Overall, the CUA women sit in third place with 103 points, while the men are in fifth with 60.5 points.

On the women's side, Ladas set a school and conference record in the 500 free, as she finished in a time of 5:07.09, which was more than four seconds faster than the second place finisher. 

Ashley Wilson placed third in the 50 free, as she posted a time of 25.62 seconds to earn 12 points for CUA and the 400 yard medley relay team of Shannon Silsby, Lisa Brooks, Rachel Berry and Ladas set a school record with a time of 4:05.75, good for 24 points in the team standings.

The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Wilson, Rose Buckley, Kristen Gunn and Silsby took third place in its event with a time of 1:42.65.

Susquehanna currently sits on top of the women's standings with 130 points, followed by Merchant Marine Academy with 110 points and CUA with 103.  Scranton (88), Drew (88), Juniata (54) and Goucher (54) round out the standings.

In men's action, Capozella won the 200 IM with a CUA and Landmark Conference record time of 1:54.83 to earn 16 points for the Cardinals.

In addition, Dominic Grillo placed fourth (21.92) and Pat Flannery sixth (22.06) in the 50 free.

Merchant Marine Academy is currently leading on the men's side after the Mariners registered 189.5 points on day one.  Susquehanna is next with 133 points, followe by Scranton with 95.  Goucher (70), CUA (60.5) and Drew (38) are next in line.
