Strong performances throughout double dual for Cardinals

LEXINGTON, Va. – The CUA swim teams headed to Virginia on Saturday to compete in a double dual meet with Washington & Lee and Marymount and there were several impressive performances on the day.  Lisa Brooks and Caleb Capozella won two events each, while the men's and women's 200-yard freestyle relay teams both took first place in their respective events.

The CUA men and women defeated Marymount in head-to-head scoring, while the Generals got the best of the Cardinals on both sides.

In the women's events, senior Lisa Brooks won the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:12.28 and her time of 2:38.17 in the 200 breaststroke was also tops among all competitors.

Freshman Joanna Ladas won the 1650-yard freestyle as she finished in a time of 18:11.92 and later she placed second in the 500 free (5:24.97) and third in the 200 free (2:03.01).

Shannon Silsby came in third in the 100 backstroke, as she finished in 1:04.71 and Gabby Giambagno did the same in the 200 butterfly, with a time of 2:23.42.  Giambagno later came in second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.98), one spot ahead of Rachel Berry, who finished third with a time of 1:05.13.

The women's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Kristen Gunn, Ashley Wilson, Annie Cannatella and Joanna Ladas won its respective event, finishing in 1:48.74, while Rachel Berry, Lisa Brooks, Emily Nguyen and Gabby Giambagno came in second with a time of 1:51.95.

On the men's side of things, Capozella finished the 100-yard backstroke in 54.30 seconds to take first place and with a time of 1:58.65, he earned a second first place finish, this time coming in the 200-yard backstroke.

Pat Flannery was third in the 200 butterfly (2:09.14) and Justin Kenyon also finished third, but in the 1650 freestyle (17:31.68). In other action, Flannery's time of 55.64 was good for second place in the 100 butterfly. 

Brendan Reilly posted a runner-up finish in the 50 free, finishing in a time of 23.37 seconds, and later he came in third in the 100 free (52.19).

In the 500 free CUA claimed the second through fourth spots, with Brian Jones, Kenyon and Zach Hutton filling those lanes.  Paul McGee (5:00.64) and Evan Hundley (5:03.89) came in second and third, respectively, in the 400 IM.

The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team matched the women with a first place finish as Pat Flannery, Caleb Capozella, Brendan Reilly and Stephen Gill posted a time of 1:31.76.

CUA will return to the pool next weekend when the Cardinal women take on Randolph Macon at home on January 29.  Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
