Cardinals defeat Drew behind Owunna's big performance

MADISON, N.J. - The Cardinals completed a perfect weekend on Saturday by defeating Drew 66-50. Junior Katarina Owunna not only led the team in scoring with 21 points, she also led the team in rebounds with 13.  Jenny McGann added 13 points and Kelli Josephsen finished with 12.

The Cardinals shot 42.1% and had a good night from the free throw line, going 12-13 (95.8-percent).  They also held the Rangers to a 29.9% shooting performance.

Danielle Barber led the Rangers with 17 points with Victoria Ault adding 13.

The first half was a back-and-fourth match-up and ended with a jumper by Liz Briones to put the Cardinals up by one as the teams went into the locker room.

CUA came out strong in the second half outscoring the Rangers 41-26.

Owunna's two free throws at the 15:49 mark put CUA in front by ten, but the Rangers battled back and got to within two on Whitney Mackay's 3-pointer two minutes later.

The Cardinals responded with six straight, including a McGann layup, before Jennifer Mateo sank a three down the other end.

McGann then drilled a trifecta of her own and two Jill Woerner free throws gave CUA an 11-point advantage.

The lead grew to 14 on Claire McEvily's jumper at the 2:33 mark, and Drew never got any closer than 11 the rest of the way.

The win gives CUA a 5-2 record in the Landmark Conference, which places the Cardinals alone in third place and in good position for a postseason berth.

CUA will return to action on January 24 when the Cardinals host The College of New Jersey inside the DuFour Center.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
