CUA opens season on Tuesday at home vs. Shorewomen

WASHINGTON – CUA welcomes Washington College to town on Tuesday evening in the 2011-12 season opener.  The Cardinals return four starters from a season ago, including Jill Woerner, who received all-conference and all-region accolades after averaging 16.4 points per game.

Woerner not only led the Cardinals in scoring last season, but also in rebounding (7.3), steals (2.5), and blocks (1.5).  She ranked second in the Landmark Conference in scoring, field goal percentage, blocks and steals, and seventh in rebounding.

Along with Woerner, CUA also brings back Jenny McGann (9.8 ppg), Katarina Owunna (9.4), Liz Briones (9.1), Emily Grabiak (5.2), and Holly Janicki (4.8), giving Head Coach Matt Donohue six of his top seven scorers from last year.

CUA won 19 games in 2010-11, which were its most since the 2005-06 season, and the Cardinals also earned a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament and ECAC Championship game for the first time.

The Cardinals have won five of their last six season openers, including last year when they defeated Eastern Mennonite 81-77 in Lancaster, Pa.

Washington College is coming off a season in which it won 12 games, 10 of which came within the Centennial Conference.  The 10 wins were the most ever for the Shorewomen in Centennial competition.

Washington returns its top five scorers from a season ago, led by Sally O'Donnell (11.9) and Meghan Tait (10.4).  The top rebounder, Latisha Pledger, also returns after pulling down 8 caroms per game.

CUA won last year's meeting between these teams in Chestertown, Md. by a score of 74-63.  Woerner (15), Kerri Confrey (11) and Mary McGann (11) each hit for double figures in what was the Cardinals' fourth straight win at the time.  CUA held the Shorewomen to 28 percent shooting from the floor.

The Cardinals and Shorewomen will tip off their game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday from inside the DuFour Center.

Following Tuesday's game, CUA hits the road to play in the McDaniel Tip-off Tournament.  The Cardinals will face Richard Stockton on Friday evening at 8 in their first game of the weekend.
