No. 20 CUA moves to 7-0 with road win at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – No. 20 CUA never trailed Washington College in a 64-53 win on Saturday evening.  Emily Grabiak recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists to help the Cardinals improve to 7-0 this season.  Joining Grabiak in double figures were Jill Woerner with 17 points and Jenny McGann with 11.

Woerner scored the first two points of the night just three seconds in and sent the Cardinals on their way.

A 3-pointer by Grabiak less than three minutes in completed an 11-0 run by CUA to begin the game, and a Josephine Migash layup three minutes after that opened up a 20-2 advantage.

Washington College pulled to within 10 on Ashley Espinosa's trifecta with 10:41 to play in the first, but CUA scored four straight to open up a 24-10 advantage.

CUA continued to increase its lead, going in front by 21 on McGann's layup with 2:24 on the first half clock.

The Shorewomen answered with eight straight however, to close to within 13 at the break.

Back-to-back baskets by McGann and Migash early in the second half put CUA in front by 19, and a Karlyn Dixon jumper two minutes later made it a 21-point spread.

Washington College continued to hang around, getting to within 11 on Dee Madox's basket with 7:28 remaining, but McGann drilled a 3-pointer for CUA and the Cards extended to a 14-point lead.

CUA did not allow Washington College to get any closer than nine the remainder of the way as the Cardinals won their seventh straight.

CUA's defense was terrific all game, holding the Shorewomen to 30% shooting on the night, including just 23% in the first half.  The Cardinals also forced 19 turnovers and converted them into 22 points.

Owunna led CUA in rebounding with 12 and in blocks with five, while Woerner was the team leader in steals with four.

CUA now heads to Puerto Rico where the Cardinals will play two games in San Juan.  CUA opens action on Wednesday when it takes on Eureka at 10 a.m.
