Salisbury Buzzer Beater Upsets Catholic

WASHINGTON – With CUA ahead 65-62 with 1:45 to play, the Cardinals missed critical free throws down the stretch and could not hold onto a two-point lead as Salisbury hit a buzzer-beating three pointer to take down the Cardinals 67-66 in Salisbury, Md.

Freshman Michelle Desantis scored a career-high 16 points, while fellow classmate Melissa Errico also a recorded a career-high outing of 15 points to go with six boards.  After posting a career-best 24 points on Tuesday, Emily Grabiak notched 11 points and seven rebounds. Jayni Webster was the final Cardinal to reach double-figures with 10 points.

Collectively, CUA went 23-of-59 from the field, 6-of-18 from behind the arc and 14-of-22 from the free-throw line.

The Cards opened the contest trailing by seven at the 17:05 mark before charging on a 20-11 run taking the lead, 20-18.  Catholic continued its offensive dominance into the halftime intermission with a score of 33-22.

By the half, Desantis led with nine points, as Errico followed with eight points.

Catholic maintained a double-figure lead until the 9:38 mark.  Salisbury challenged CUA with eight unanswered points for a two-point Cardinal margin lead, 57-55.

While Catholic retained the lead, a 1-of-4 shooting performance from the charity stripe put Salisbury within two points. The Sea Gulls grabbed the rebound off of a missed CUA free throw with six seconds left in the game setting the scene for Sarah Seipp who dribbled the length of the floor and nailed her first three pointer of the night at the buzzer to lift Salisbury to a 67-66 victory.

The Seagulls were led by Anna Hackett with 24 points and 10 points apiece from Seipp and Courtney McManus.  Becca Hines pulled down a team-high nine boards for Salisbury.

CUA heads to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Colorado College Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 29-30.  Catholic with face Otterbein at 1 p.m. MST/3 p.m. EST on Friday and Carleton at 1 p.m. MST/3 p.m. EST.
