Lady Cards Secure No. 2 Slot with 76-64 Victory Over Moravian

WASHINGTON – With a 76-64 win at Moravian, the Catholic women's basketball team clinched the No. 2 spot and will host a semifinal game of the Landmark Conference Championship Tournament, which will be a rematch of tonight's game against the Greyhounds.

Sophomore forward Josephine Migash had a career night for the Cardinals as she directed the offense with her first double-double on personal bests of 23 points and 15 boards.  Emily Grabiak continues to excel on the hardwood and remain a dominant factor with her 11th double-double on a 12-point and 13-rebound outing.  Melissa Errico contributed 15 points with a 7-of-9 performance from the field, while Michelle Desantis contributed 13 points to the win.

Catholic started the contest with back-to-back turnovers in its first two possessions, allowing the Greyhounds to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead. However, the Cardinals score the next seven points to take their first lead of the game at 15:25 from a Desantis jumper.

Nellie Tanguay drilled a triple to give the home team a 9-7 lead at 14:47, which would be their final lead of the game. Sarah Merchant tied things up with a layup at 14:01, which ignited another 7-0 run for the Cardinals. After a missed shot Moravian shot, Jayni Webster hit her first three-pointer of the game to give Catholic its second lead of the night with 13:20 left in the half.

Migash capped the run on a layup at 11:07 to push the lead to 16-9. Moravian was able to chip away and bring the score to within three but that would be as close as they would get. CUA pushed the the difference to 10 with 3:36 left on a layup by Bernadette Launi, before heading into the lockerroom ahead 34-26.

The Cardinals began the second half on a charge, going on another 7-0 run in a span of 1:17 to take a 15-point lead, 41-26.

Catholic reached its biggest lead of the night at 12:23 when another Migash layup put the visitors up 54-34. However, the Greyhounds battled to cut the lead back down for a final score of 76-64.

Desantis was a huge factor defensively for Catholic, recording a career-high six steals in win.

As a unit, Catholic dominated the battle on the boards, outrebounding Moravian 55-34. The Greyhounds are the top shot-blocking team in the nation, averaging 8.8 blocks per game. Tonight, they rejected a 13 of Catholic's shots, a season high for any CUA opponent this year.

Catholic committed just 12 fouls for the game, holding Moravian to just 11 free throw attempts, although the Greyhounds connected on nine of those attempts for an 82% accuracy, while Catholic hit just 10-of-17 (59%).

With the win, No. 2 Catholic will now host No. 3 Moravian in the Landmark Conference Semifinal. It will be the third matchup this season and second in five days when the Greyhounds come to the DuFour Athletic Center on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m. Catholic swept the regular season series with Moravian, winning the first matchup 82-77 in overtime on Jan. 18.
The other semifinal game will see No. 1 Scranton hosting No. 4 Juniata. The championship contest will take place on Saturday, March 1 at the highest seeded team's venue.
