Cardinals Fend Off Second Half Eagle Effort for 69-50 Win

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team defeated the Juniata Eagles 69-50 for the squad's second regular season meeting win of the 2014-15 campaign in mid-week action to improve to 17-7 on year and 11-4 in the Landmark Conference.

With the loss, Juniata drops to 8-16 and 6-9 in the league.

CUA sophomore Michelle DeSantis led the home effort with a game-high 16 points and six assists. Junior Josephine Migash, who celebrated her 21st birthday today, notched 13 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Catholic took an early double-digit lead, as Migash and DeSantis paced the Cards on a 10-0 run by the 16:50 mark and forcing a Juniata timeout.

With 7:47 remaining in the first half, CUA reached a half-high 16-point margin lead before Juniata put forth their strongest output of the half with a 12-5 run.

Despite the Eagle run, Catholic ended the first 20 minutes with an 11-point lead for a score of 32-21.

After the intermission, Juniata returned to Franny Murray court with vigor and lowering the deficit to five points by the 13:14 mark on 14-7 run.

Following another five-point margin marker, Bridget Power and Jayni Webster combined efforts for a 5-0 run to regain double-figure dominance and reach a 19-point 69-50 victory.

Katy Leamer guided the Eagles' campaign with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Kelsey Livoti scored 14 points and dropped four assists.

By the numbers, CUA shot 61 percent from the free-throw line (17 of 28), 41 percent from the field (24 of 58) and 29 percent from behind the arc (4 of 14), as JC shot 63 percent from the charity stripe (5 of 8), 33 percent from the field (20 of 61) and 18 percent from the long range (5 of 28).

Catholic concludes the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21 when take on the nationally ranked University of Scranton at 1 p.m. in Scranton, Pa.
