Cardinals Top Rangers, Earn Seventh Consecutive Win

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America women's basketball team advanced its winning streak to seven games when the Lady Cardinals downed the Drew University Rangers, 66-47, in a Landmark Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The win brings the Cardinals to 5-1 in the conference and 10-5 overall, while the Rangers drop to 3-3 in the Landmark, 6-9 overall.

The Lady Cardinals earned an early 9-0 lead in the first 2:18 minutes with shots made by senior Kristen Walheim and juniors Melissa Errico and Michelle DeSantis. Catholic doubled its score by the end of the first period for an 18-9 advantage, then outshot the Rangers 19-15 in the second ten minute period giving the Cards a 37-24 lead at the halftime break.

Junior Bridget Power opened the second half with a jumper followed by a layup to increase CUA's lead to 17 points. The Rangers closed the gap to eight points (48-40) with 8:48 remaining the game.

After two made free throws from senior Josephine Migash, senior Jayni Webster caused a turnover and assisted on a bucket from Payton Smith. Webster followed with a three-pointer, bringing Catholic's lead back up to 15. The Lady Cards continued their momentum through the final seven minutes gaining a 19 point advantage, 66-47, at the final buzzer.

Errico grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and tallied 15 points while Migash put up 13 points. DeSantis dished out a team-high seven helpers, tying her season high versus Gallaudet on Dec., 12.

The Cardinals will travel to Scranton, Pa., on Saturday Jan., 16 to continue conference play, taking on the Royals of the University of Scranton at 4 p.m.
