Cardinals Top Mariners, Claim No. 3 Landmark Seed

WASHINGTON - Sharp shooting from junior Bridget Power guided The Catholic University of America women's basketball team to a, 67-47, victory over its Landmark Conference opponent, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Cardinals close out their regular season 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the conference. They finish the year in the number three spot of the league and are set to play at No. 2 Moravian College, Wednesday, Feb. 24, for the first round of the Landmark Conference Tournament.

The Lady Cardinals and Mariners went point-for-point in the first half of the weekend contest. At the end of the first 20 minutes the teams were tied at 23 points apiece.

Catholic senior Josephine Migash opened the second half with a layup in the first five seconds, the Mariners answering with points of their own. With 5:30 to play in the third period the Lady Cards found themselves down by just one point (32-31).

A layup from junior Melissa Errico created the momentum the Cardinals needed to jump start a 10-point run. Three-pointers from Power and sophomore Payton Smith, along with a jumper from Migash, lifted the Cards to a 41-32 lead with two minutes remaining in the period. Catholic gave up just one basket while Power sunk an addition six points, bringing the score to 46-34 Cardinals, at the end of the period.

With a clear lead in the fourth period Catholic continued to increase its score, bringing the margin to 20 points by the final buzzer. Migash tallied seven points in the final period to help bring the Cards to their 67-47 victory.

Power put up a total of 19 points throughout the game, including 12 second half points. Errico tallied 13 points while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Jayni Webster had a team-high six steals, tying her season-high against Drew University on Jan. 9. Junior Michelle DeSantis dished out nine assists.

Prior to the game head coach Matt Donohue honor the women's basketball senior class of 2016. Seniors Kristen Walheim, Migash, and Webster were honored for their four years of dedication and hard work, going 84-26 over the last four season, as members of the CUA women's basketball team.
