Lady Cardinals Top Greyhounds in Overtime, Head to Landmark Conference Finals

Bethlehem, Pa. – Senior Jayni Webster and junior Melissa Errico each tallied career-high points to guide, third seeded, The Catholic University of America women's basketball team to a come-from-behind, 84-77, Landmark Conference Semifinal victory over No. 2 Moravian College on Wednesday night. 

Webster put up 24 points including five-of-eight 3-pointers while Errico tallied 27 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Michelle DeSantis went seven-of-seven from behind the free throw line and dished out a team-high 10 assists.

The win advances the Lady Cardinals to the Landmark Conference Finals on Saturday in Scranton, Pa. They will take on the conference's top seed and nationally ranked No. 3 Scranton University.

The Cards and Greyhounds went head to head in the semifinal match, with Catholic taking the first period 14-12. Errico started off the Catholic scoring, sinking her first three shots for CUA's opening six points.

Another layup from Errico increased the CUA lead to four points at the start of the second period. Back-to-back Greyhounds 3-pointers put Moravian ahead but a beyond-the-arch bucket from Webster brought the Cards back in front.

The Hounds then went on a six-point run. By the end of the second period they had earned an advantage (22-18), that they would not relinquish until the final minutes of the contest.

After being outshot 17-14 in the third period the Cards found themselves down 54-47 heading into the final 10 minutes. Two Moravian free throws from senior Alexis Wright increased the margin to nine points, but the Lady Cards were not ready for their 2016 season to end.

Buckets from Errico and senior Kristen Walheim brought the Lady Cardinals within three points of the Greyhounds with 7:43 to play. With five minutes remaining on the clock Webster sunk a 3-pointer followed by a layup from DeSantis that lifted the Cards past the Hounds (60-59).

Moravian battled back to a, 69-66, lead with six second on the clock. Just as Catholic's season appeared to be over, junior Bridget Power put up a 3-point shot, tying the game, 69-all, at the final buzzer.

The Lady Cards took the momentum into overtime, sinking 60% of their shots from the field and 77.8% from behind the charity strip. Webster and Errico each put up four points while Power sunk another 3-pointer. Sophomore Payton Smith and DeSantis put up two free throws a piece as CUA scored 15 points in the extra five minutes.

Moravian could not contend with Catholic in overtime, tallying just eight points. When the final buzzer sounded the it was the Lady Cardinals punching their ticket to the Landmark Conference Finals.
