WASHINGTON - With a 79-50 victory over Goucher College on Wednesday night inside the DuFour Center, The Catholic University of America women's basketball team remains undefeated at 5-0 in the Landmark Conference.
Catholic head coach Matt Donohue utilized his entire roster during the midweek contest as the Cardinals tallied 34 points off the bench. Freshman reserve Mollie Reynolds scored eight points with three assists while sophomore Sarah O'Neill racked up seven points with two assists. Junior Samantha Cowan came off the pine to record four steals, six points and four rebounds.
Three members of the starting lineup totaled double-digit points as junior Payton Smith tallied a team-high of 14 points. Senior Michelle DeSantis put up 13 points with four assists while freshman Megan Stafford had a career-high 11 points with two steals. Senior Melissa Errico dished out a game-high five assists.
The Cardinals' defense forced the Gophers into 23 turnovers on 16 steals while earning 20 points off miscues. As a team, Catholic shot 60.9% from the free throw line with Reynolds going 4-of-4 and Stafford going 2-of-2.
Catholic scored seven 3-pointers from six different team members during the conference matchup. Smith knocked down two while senior Bernadette Launi, as well as Cowan, DeSantis, Stafford and O'Neill each sunk one.
Cowan notched five points in the first period as the Cardinals took a 19-12 lead. The Cards opened the second quarter on a 13-3 run, and ultimately outscored the Goucher, 24-13, to take an 18-point advantage (43-25) into halftime.
Following the break, Catholic continued to increase the margin and outscored Goucher, 22-6. In the third, the Cards went 7-of-12 from the field including 2-of-2 from behind the arc.
A fourth-period rally from the Gophers (19-14) was not enough to close the 34-point gap. O'Neill tallied her seven points in the final 10 minutes to help seal the Catholic victory.
Catholic will continue conference play on Saturday, January 21, as the Cardinals travel to No. 3 Scranton. Scranton and Catholic are the only teams left unbeaten in 2016-17 Landmark play. Tipoff between the conference rivals is scheduled for 2 p.m.
