Towson, Md. - Senior Bernadette Launi of The Catholic University of America women's basketball team has been selected as the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week after the Cardinals took down conference foe and nationally-ranked No. 3 the University of Scranton in overtime on Saturday. The Cardinals also captured a victory over the Landmark opponent, Goucher College on Wednesday evening.
"I am beyond thrilled for Bernadette," said head coach, Matt Donohue. "She has put in a tremendous amount of time, energy and hard work to overcome a great deal of adversity and become the player that she is today for our program!"
Launi, tallied 17 points in the conference showdown, going 5-of-7 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
In her final career, regular season game at Scranton, Launi was determined to capture the victory. With the game tied at 69-all after regulation, she put her heart on the court and lifted the Cards to an 82-76 overtime triumph.
Launi scored six of Catholic's 13 overtime points, including four in the final 62 seconds. The Royals could only manage seven of their own as the Lady Cards charged the floor at the final buzzer.
"Bernadette has been a tremendous leader and competitor. She has been at the very heart of our success this year," explains Donohue.
The Cardinals handed the Royals their first regular-season loss since January 17, 2015, while breaking up the Royals 50-game regular season win streak.
Now the only undefeated team in the Landmark, the Cardinals will travel to Selinsgrove, Pa., to take on the Susquehanna River Hawks on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m.
