DeSantis Scores Career-High 36 Points, Cardinals Down Eagles

WASHINGTON - Senior Michelle DeSantis of The Catholic University of America women's basketball team played the game of her career, scoring 36 points in the team's 89-71 victory over Juniata College on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals remain undefeated at 8-0 in Landmark Conference play (17-2 overall).

DeSantis, who's previous career high was 26-points (vs. Moravian 1/31/15), shot 76.5% from the field including 6-of-7 from the free throw line and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Along with her career-high point total, DeSantis dished out seven assists while grabbing five defensive rebounds and three steals.

Senior Melissa Errico totaled 15 points with seven rebounds while classmate Bernadette Launi pulled down nine rebounds, dished out six assists and tallied 14 points.

DeSantis opened the game with back-to-back layups in the first 2:29 minutes, to give Catholic a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals never trailed throughout the remaining 37:31 minutes.

Juniata tied the game at 30 apiece with 1:42 to play in the second quarter. A layup from freshman Mollie Reynolds followed by two free throws from DeSantis gave the Lady Cards a 34-30 lead with just seconds to go in the half. A buzzer-beating three-point bucket from junior Samantha Cowan lifted Catholic to a seven-point margin heading into the break.

A field goal from Errico, 3:31 into the third period, sent the Cardinals on an 8-0 run to create Catholic's largest margin of the contest, 22-points (60-38). With 2:36 remaining in the quarter, DeSantis tallied five points and Launi hit two free throws. The Cardinals took a 67-50 advantage into the final quarter.

Juniata played its highest scoring quarter in the in the final 10 minutes, tallying 21 points to Catholic's 22. Seven fourth period points from Errico and five from Launi helped the Lady Cards maintain their lead, ending the game with an 18-point margin.

Catholic continues Landmark play on the road in Towson, Md., versus the Goucher College Gophers on Wednesday, February 1.
