No. 22 Cardinals Fall to No. 21 Royals, 46-44

WASHINGTON - No. 22 The Catholic University of America women's basketball team dropped its first Landmark Conference game of the season to No. 21 the University of Scranton, 46-44, on Saturday evening.

During the showdown, Catholic senior Michelle DeSantis tied Scranton senior Alexix Roman with a game-high 15 points. DeSantis dished out three assists while grabbing five rebounds. Fellow senior Melissa Errico pulled down eight rebounds while classmate Bernadette Launi grabbed five along with making three steals.

The Royals took an early lead, outshooting the Cards 17-12 in the first period. The Catholic defense held Scranton to just 10 points in the second quarter, entering the halftime break trailing 27-18.

The Cardinals made four field goals from behind the arc in the third quarter close to the gap to four points (40-36). Senior Bernadette Launi hit the first two 3-pointers of the period followed by one from DeSantis and another from freshman Mollie Reynolds.

Catholic and Scranton went basket for basket in the fourth period and the Cards came within one point with two minutes remaining. The Lady Cards were unable to convert another basket as the Royal hit a free throw with eight seconds remaining to reach a final score of 46-44.

The No. 22 Cardinals will continue conference play at home on Wednesday, February 15 versus Elizabethtown at 7 p.m., before closing out the regular season at Moravian on February 18.
