Women's Basketball Defeats Drew in Conference Opener, 68-49

WASHINGTON - The Landmark Conference Preseason No. 1 pick, The Catholic University of America women's basketball team, opened league play with an outstanding 68-49 victory over Drew University on Saturday afternoon.

Three Catholic women scored double-digit points in the Landmark triumph. Senior Briana Bull led the Cardinals and completed a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bull recorded a game-high two blocks and made one steal.

Fellow senior Samantha Cowan made her first career start and posted 13 points, eight rebounds and a game-high six assists. Sophomore CC Mooney led the reserves with 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Collectively, the Cardinals pulled down 19 offensive rebounds to collect 14 second-chance points. They forced the Rangers to 27 miscues and capitalized with 19 points off turnovers.

Eager for a victory, Cowan got things started for Catholic with a three-point bucket just 10 seconds after tip-off. One minute later, Bull hit a three-point shot and the Cardinals were off to a 6-0 start.

The Rangers fought back and tied the game at 12 points apiece in the seventh minute of the play but a layup from sophomore Megan Stafford put Catholic back on top (14-12) and they would not surrender the lead through the remainder of the game.

Senior Payton Smith opened the second period with a 3-point score and the Cardinals found themselves with a 21-16 advantage one minute into the quarter. Cowan completed a layup to start Catholic on an 8-0 run with shots made but freshman Kate Parker, junior Emily O'Connor and Bull which gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the first half (13 points, 29-16).

Sophomore Sydney Poindexter made Catholic's first basket of the third period and Smith sunk her second three-pointer of the night to put the Cardinals up 40-27 just moments into the second half. Catholic managed 12 additional points in the quarter to take a 13-point advantage (52-39) going into the finals period.

Catholic outscored Drew 16-10 in the fourth quarter. Mooney completed a layup with under three minutes remaining to give the Cardinals their largest margin of the game (20 points, 66-46). Stafford put up the Cardinals final shot of the game and made the jumper just 17 seconds before the final buzzer.

The Cardinals, now 3-1, return home to host Neuman University on Saturday, December 9 at 4 p.m.
