Cardinals Rout Gophers in Landmark Matchup

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women’s basketball team topped the Gophers of Goucher College 74-32 to advance its Landmark Conference record to 5-4 (14-5 overall) for the 2017-18 season.

Catholic head coach Matt Donohue exhausted the Cardinals' bench during the midweek contest giving 14 women at least 10 minutes a piece hardwood. Catholic had 12 different point scorers to contribute to their season-high 74 points.

Senior Briana Bull put up a team-high 18 points and tallied two assists and two steals. Fellow starter, sophomore Megan Stafford grabbed a team-high six rebounds with three assists and three steals.

Freshman Maggie Rakowsky and junior Sarah O'Neill led the Catholic reserves with nine points. Freshman Becca Rhoades contributed six bench points as she shot 2-of-2 from behind the arc.

The Cardinals shot 52.9% from long range with three-point buckets from Bull (2), Rhoades (2), Rakowsky (1), O’Neill (1), freshman Kate Parker (1), sophomore Mollie Reynolds (1) and senior Samantha Cowan (1).

The Gophers stayed within two points of the Cardinals through the first six minutes of play (8-6) before Rakowsky hit a layup and Bull went back-to-back with a jumper and three-point shot to give Catholic a 15-7 advantage after the opening period.

Catholic continued to advance the score and witnessed its greatest lead of the first half when Parker knocked down a three-point bucket with 3:26 remaining in the second quarter. The Cardinals outscored the Gophers 20-8 in the period to take a 35-15 advantage at the break.

During the third period, O’Neill went 3-of-4 from the field while Reynolds shot 2-of-3 and Bull hit 2-of-4 to push Catholic to a 57-24 advantage.

Freshmen Courtney McCool and Cristin George alongside classmates Rakowsky and Rhoades each played the full 10-minutes of the final quarter while Parker split time with sophomore Caroline Sullivan. The underclassmen shot a collective 53.8% from the floor including 3-of-4 from long range to outscore the Gophers 17-8 in the period.
