Rojas leads CUA with 20

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball squad (3-2, 1-0 CAC) seemed to have its game against the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks (3-2, 0-1 CAC) in the bag Wednesday evening at the DuFour Center.  However the Seahawks had a different agenda coming back from a 20-point halftime deficit to almost take out the Cardinals.  CUA was able to hold on and got the 66-60 win giving the team its first CAC victory of the 2006-07 season.

CUA took over the lead early on and went on a 20-0 run in the first thanks to a barrage of three-pointers.  Laura Iuliano (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./La Salle Academy) and Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) each hit one of three in a row to go up.  A flurry of Seahawk fouls didn't help the cause as CUA hit six in a row from the line.

At the break CUA was ahead 38-21 and looked to have to game under control.  The team shot 49 percent from the field and 64 percent from behind the arc.  Rojas led the way with 11 first half points and the Cards were controlling the boards 20-11.

However, turnovers and allowing offensive rebounds made it a different game in the second half.  The Cards committed numerous turnovers to allow a 15-0 Seahawk run in the second half that brought the team within three with 7:32 remaining.  From this point on it was a war as teams went back and forth, the Seahawks never able to overtake the Cardinal lead despite mistakes.

With time ticking down, the Seahawks were forced to foul and the Cards proved adept from the line.  CUA was 13-16 at the charity stripe in the second half narrowly escaping with a 66-60 win.

Rojas led the team with 20 points, the senior's first big time performance of the season.  DeBorger and Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, N.J./Georgetown Visitation) each added 12.  CUA outrebounded SMC 40-35 but committed 24 turnovers while St. Mary's had 19.

The Cards will be back in action on Saturday in the first game of another CAC doubleheader at the DuFour Center.  The women will take on the Goucher Gophers at 2:00 p.m.
