WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's basketball team escaped a loss from the Gallaudet Bison (2-12, 0-6 CAC) Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center.  Despite Gallaudet's 0-6 Capital Athletic Conference record, the Bison came out strong implementing a stingy defense against the fast-paced Cardinal offense.  This combination resulted in 62 total turnovers and 43 personal fouls but the Cards still found a way to get the 57-41 win and improve to 11-5 overall, 4-2 in conference.

Twelve minutes into the game, it looked as if the Cardinals would run away with it thanks to an early 12-2 run.  However, the Bison came charging back and took it inside to get back into the game bring the deficit to four with just a few minutes to play in the half.  This was the point where Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./LaSalle Academy) took over and gave CUA some breathing room.  The senior guard scored the Cardinals' final six points to make it 29-17 going into the locker room.

The first half was sloppy with Catholic University accumulating 14 turnovers and Gallaudet notching 13.  CUA shot 40 percent in the first half and outrebounded the Bison 20-17.  Rojas had a team-high 14 points while freshman Shea Macdonald (Chantilly, Va/Chantilly High School) added five.

CUA was able to maintain its lead for much of the first half implementing a tough defense of their own to cause 23 Bison turnovers.  Up by 20 with 15:40 left Gallaudet went on a run getting the deficit down to nine but a total team effort brought the lead back up and allowed the Cards to cruise to their 57-41 victory.

Rojas led all scorers with 19 while freshman Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, MD/Catoctin High School) had eight.  Brittainy Payne had 13 points for the Bison.  CUA forced 36 Gallaudet turnovers on 24 steals but was outrebounded 43-41.

The Cardinals will embark on a three-game road trip traveling to Mary Washington on Tuesday.
