Linderoth scores 22 and DeBorger adds 18

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's basketball team continued its winning ways with a 62-55 rout of the Christopher Newport Lady Captains (6-4).  The win improved the Cards to 8-4 on the season.  The team is currently riding a three-game win streak after dropping two games early in December.

The teams played each other evenly in the opening stanza with three ties and two lead changes in the first five minutes.  An 8-0 at 12:19 put the Cards up by eight but the Lady Captains were able to stay in the game thanks to strong rebounding.  CUA never got up by more than 10 in the first half and CNU came back as time ran down making it 28-25 at intermission.

Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) led the Cards in the first half with 10 points while her fellow forward Shannon Mertz (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) had six.  CNU was strong in the paint outrebounding the Cardinals 23-16, scoring 10 in the lane and gaining seven second chance points to CUA's five.

Just like the first the second half was a close battle from the start.  Nikki Rowland hit a jumper off of a steal at 18:36 to bring the Lady Captains within one.  The shooting of Linderoth and Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, NY/Holy Trinity) kept CUA on top however the squad could never pull away committing key turnover to break up a run and put CNU right back in the game.

With less than two minutes to go the Lady Captains closed in on the Cards getting within one.  DeBorger then stepped up and hit a three to go up four.  Linderoth added a jumper to give CUA some breathing room and the game was in the bag.  CNU was forced to foul making the final 62-55.

Linderoth led all scorers with 22 points while DeBorger added 18.  Both notched three steals from the Lady Captains who had 22 turnovers to CUA's 16 for the game.  Mertz finished with 10 points and a team-high five rebounds tying point guard Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./LaSalle Academy).  The two teams combined for 43 personal fouls and Catholic University benefited from the rough play shooting 35 free throws hitting 28 for an average of 80 percent.

CUA will welcome the students back to campus on Monday and the Cards will host Greensboro College at 6:00 p.m., at the DuFour Center.
