Sea Gulls End Cardinals' Season
Freshman Justine Gray scores 19

SALISBURY, Md. - Despite a solid effort by upper and underclassmen alike, the Catholic University women's basketball squad (15-11) saw its season end at the hands of the Salisbury Sea Gulls (15-10) Tuesday evening in Maryland.  The fourth seeded Sea Gulls beat the #5 seed Cardinals 75-69 in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.  CUA will now wait to see if it gets a bid to any post season play.

Salisbury jumped out to a commanding lead to start the game as CUA allowed a 16-point run making it 18-2 at 14 minutes.  The Cards began to drop some shots led by senior Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./LaSalle Academy) who had seven in the half but it wasn't enough to surpass the huge Sea Gull lead.  CUA went into the locker room down 45-29.

Rojas and freshman Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, MD/Catoctin High School) scored seven points each in the first while another freshman senior duo of Justine Gray (Cortdlandt Manor, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) and Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, NY/Holy Trinity) added six apiece.  CUA shot 33 percent for the first half while the Sea Gulls were almost unable to miss with 56.3 percent shooting from the floor, 80 percent from three and 100 percent at the line.

Salisbury came out in the second half and hit a three to go up by 19 but CUA would take no more as they came roaring back.  The Cards put together a 10-2 run including seven points from Gray that put them right back in the game.  Down by 13 at 12:45, the Cardinals again went on a hot streak scoring 11 unanswered point to cut it to two with eight minutes remaining.  From that point on it was an all out war and despite going up by one with four minutes left, CUA couldn't hold on and lost 75-69.

Gray finished with a team-high 19 as well as seven rebounds while Rojas had 18.  DeBorger and Robinson continued to pace each other with 11 each.  CUA was outrebounded 38-36 and also had 20 turnovers to Salisbury's 15.  The Sea Gulls shot just 25 percent in the second half giving them 41.6 percent for the game as the Cards edged them shooting 41.8 percent.

CUA is finished for the conference season but is still eligible for post season play.  Continue to check for all of the tournament information.
