Peterson Leads the CUA Women's Basketball Team to 71-59 Win Over Keystone

Brianna Peterson made nine of her 14 shots including a perfect 2-for-2 from three point range to drop 22 points and lead the CUA women's basketball team (4-2) to a 71-59 win over Keystone College (0-3) on Sunday afternoon.

Jenny McGann joined Peterson in double figures as she dropped a career high 19 points shooting 70% from the field. Kate Priftis added five helpers for the Cards while Jill Woerner added three steals.

Ellen Fallon and Yasmeen Bates led the way for Keystone as Fallon dropped 14 points and Bates added a double double with 18 rebounds and 10 points for the Giants.

A pair of three's put the Giants up early, but a triple by Jenny McGann, combined with jumpers by Peterson and Woerner, put the Cardinals ahead for good only three minutes into the contest.

The Cards broke out to a lead of as many as 12 but settled at a 7-point advantage at the break.

In the second half it was more of the same for CUA as Katarina Owunna opened the half with a jumper. Strong shooting allowed the Cards to build their lead throughout the second half.  The Cardinals led by as many as 17 with 10:02 remaining and held off the Giant attack throughout the rest of the contest to walk away with the 12-point win.

The Cardinals were out rebounded in the contest 36-26, but 19 Giant turnovers combined with a strong 44.4% field goal percentage for CUA tilted the game in favor of the red and black.  CUA shot 7-of-13 from three point range (53.8%) and converted 16-of-30 trips to the line to earn the victory.

CUA will return to action on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. as the Cardinals will host Washington Adventist at the DuFour Center.  This will be the final contest because the Cards open the 2009 Landmark Conference schedule against Goucher College on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the DuFour Center.
