CUA set for pair of huge showdowns this weekend at home

WASHINGTON - Winners of four straight, the Cardinals open their Landmark Conference home schedule this weekend with a pair of tough matchups vs. Scranton and Moravian.  CUA won two road contests last weekend, to improve to 4-1 in the conference, which puts CUA in a three-way tie for first place, along with the two teams it will host this weekend.

The Cardinals secured a thrilling 68-65 victory at Merchant Marine Academy on January 14, which came down to a Jill Woerner game-winning three-pointer just before the final buzzer.  The very next day, CUA rode a strong second half performance to down Drew 83-62 and improve to 4-1 in the conference.

CUA usually gets out early and plays with the lead as the Cardinals have outscored their opponents a combined 601-465 in the first half of games this season.  CUA is 11-1 when leading at intermission.

Junior Holly Janicki has provided CUA with quite a spark off the bench recently.  In her last five games, the Florida native is averaging 11 points on 50 percent shooting, including a 47 percent showing from three-point range.  Janicki has made a team-best 11 three-pointers during that time.

After beginning the Landmark Conference schedule with three straight wins, Scranton went 1-1 last weekend, suffering its first loss at Juniata.  Despite that loss, the Royals enter this weekend at 4-1 in the league and sit tied atop the league standings with CUA and Moravian.

Scranton has won six of seven games at home this season, but is just 3-3 on the road.  The Royals lead the Landmark in scoring defense (54.0) and scoring margin (+9.4) and rank second in field goal percentage defense (.352).  Leading the way offensively has been Megan Kopecki at 13.5 points per game, and overall the Royals feature seven players averaging at least 4.5 points.

The defending Landmark Conference champions, the Moravian Greyhounds are one of three teams in the league with a 4-1 mark.  Moravian has won four straight Landmark contests, including games vs. Susquehanna and Juniata last weekend.  The Greyhounds have won just once away from home this season, which came on December 11 at Albright.

The last three Landmark Conference Players of the Week hail from Moravian, including this week's honoree Amy Heffner, who leads the squad in scoring at nearly 19 points per game.  Emily Smith (12.5) and Alexandra Blair (11.1) join her in double figures for a team that ranks second in the conference in scoring (69.9 ppg).

The Cardinals and Royals will get the weekend going with a 7:30 p.m. tip on Friday evening, while on Saturday, CUA and Moravian will tip-off their game at 4.  CUA will offer live video and stats for both contests.
