Cardinals tip off new season on Friday vs. East. Mennonite

WASHINGTON – After more than a month of practices and scrimmages, the CUA women's basketball team will tip-off its 2010-11 season on Friday afternoon when the Cardinals head to Lancaster, Pa. for the Franklin & Marshall Terry Greene Memorial.  CUA will take on Eastern Mennonite in the first game of the day.

Matt Donohue's squad returns a strong contingent from a season ago for 2010-11 and also welcomes in a talented group of newcomers.  The Cardinals ranked third in the Landmark Conference last year in scoring, as well as second in three-point shooting and third in defensive rebounding.

CUA returns the reigning Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year in Jill Woerner, who posted averages of 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds, while leading the Cardinals in blocked shots with 44.

The Cardinals face a tough early-season schedule as CUA will play seven of its first nine games away from home, including the conference opener at Goucher on December 4.

Eastern Mennonite is coming off a 16-10 season a year ago, including a mark of 11-9 within the ODAC.  The Royals took on Averett on Tuesday in their season opener and fell to the Cougars 74-66.  Sara Lamneck led EMU with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds.

CUA and Eastern Mennonite will get things started at 2:00 on Friday, with tournament host Franklin & Marshall taking on Elizabethtown in the nightcap.  On Saturday the tournament consolation game will take place at 2:00, while the championship is set for 6:00.
