PHOENIX, Md. - The Catholic University women's golf team took first place in the Goucher Spring Invitational at Hillendale Country Club. The Cardinals beat out Goucher and Sweet Briar with a 735 team score in the two-day invitational and sophomore Tess Murphy finished with the best score of all competitors for the first win of her collegiate career.
Catholic came out on top in the team's final tune-up before Landmark Championships in two weeks, picking up its second win of the year, and first since a top finish in the first-ever event in team history as the Cardinals won a tri-match on September 14, 2018. The team shot a 362 on Sunday and a 372 in windier conditions Monday to total a 735, 34 shots better than second-place Goucher College.
Murphy shot the a 176 (+32) in two days, which tied for lowest score of the invitational. The sophomore won a tiebreaker thanks to her back nine final round score of 91, which bested Goucher's Christina Pevey and her 94. Murphy shot an 85 on Sunday, putting her in second after one day of competition. After the invitational win, Murphy leads Cardinal golfers with a 91.31 average round score.
Freshmen JoJo Parker and Mary Colella finished fourth and fifth, respectively, out of 17 competing golfers. Parker shot a 93 and 87 to total 180 (+36) and Colella carded an 89 in round one for third place on Sunday and a 96 for a 185 (+41).
Fellow freshman Olivia Brogan tied for seventh with a 195 (+51). She shot 95 on Sunday and 100 on day two to contribute as Catholic's fourth scoring golfer.
Next up for the women's team is the Landmark Conference Championships on April 27-28 at in Branchburg, N.J. The Cardinals will compete against the conference at Fox Hollow Golf Club.
