Swarthout named Landmark Defensive Player of the Week

WASHINGTON – Mary Swarthout earned her fourth weekly award from the Landmark Conference on Monday, but it was her first Defensive Player of the Week award of the season.  Swarthout had a pair of terrific games for the Cardinals last week in helping them to two wins.

Swarthout scored two goals, handed out a pair of assists, won six draw controls, caused two turnovers and scooped up six ground balls in CUA's 18-7 win at Rowan on April 25.

The senior standout then found the back of the net four times, to go along with three caused turnovers, five draw controls and three ground balls in the Cardinals' 18-5 romp of Scranton in the regular season finale on April 29.

Swarthout and the CUA defense held their two opponents to only 12 goals and 36 shots last week, while forcing 34 turnovers, 13 of which were caused.

For the season, Swarthout leads the Cardinals in goals (53), assists (24), points (77), ground balls (56), draw controls (95) and caused turnovers (28).

Swarthout and the Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to Scranton in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Tournament.  Start time from inside Cardinal Stadium is set for 4 p.m.  CUA is the four-time defending conference champion.
