Cardinals down No. 19 Stevenson for third win of 2012

WASHINGTON – The No. 18 Cardinals got back on the winning track with a 15-9 win over No. 19 Stevenson on Saturday afternoon inside Cardinal Stadium.  Meghan Brady led CUA with four goals, while Theresa Ciletti, Mary Swarthout and Mallory Vogel scored three times apiece.

Brady got the CUA scoring started with a goal 2:32 into the game and Gretchen Wade soon followed with another goal to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

Vogel then got into the act with her first goal of the day at the 24:29 mark to put CUA in front by three.

Amanda LeGar got Stevenson on the board with a goal at the 22:48 mark and Mandy Marston followed with another Mustangs goal to make it 3-2.

Brady and Swarthout answered with back-to-back goals for CUA to give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead with 18:29 to play before halftime.

Stevenson's Leah Warner made it a 5-3 game with a goal at the 11:32 mark, but the Cardinals closed the half on a 4-0 run to take a 9-3 lead into intermission.

Swarthout scored twice, and Brady Ciletti once during the 4-0 CUA run.

Brady got the second half going with her fourth score of the day 31 seconds in to put the Cardinals on top by seven.

The Mustangs answered with two straight goals to cut CUA's lead to 10-5, but Vogel and Erin Fowler scored back-to-back goals to up the Cardinals' advantage back to seven.

Stevenson made one final push, with three straight goals to get within 12-8 with 16:17 on the clock, but Vogel answered yet again for CUA to make it 13-8.

Ciletti closed out the scoring for the Cardinals with a pair of goals in a span of 1:39 to give CUA its third win of 2012.

CUA finished with a 29-15 advantage in shots, and the Cardinals won the ground ball battle, 23-19. 

Swarthout won nine draw controls for CUA, while Caroline Scalamandre added four.  Swarthout and Brady led the Cardinals with two caused turnovers apiece and Brady scooped up a team-high four ground balls.

CUA hits the road for its next game when the Cardinals travel to face Messiah on Wednesday afternoon.  Start time is set for 4 p.m.
