Cardinals Defeat Drew 21-11, Lock Up No. 1 Seed for Conference Tournament

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season with a 21-11 win over visiting Drew on Saturday afternoon to go a perfect 6-0 in Landmark play.

Nicole Laitner lead the Cardinals with a career-high six goals while Clair Schmitzer and Anastasia Brandenburg combined for nine goals and an assist as CUA broke the 20-goal mark for the third time this season. Lindsay Brophy handed out five assists while Laura Dunn had four helpers.

The Cardinals led by as much as three in the first period before going on a 9-2 run in the second to pull away from the Rangers.

Schmitzer scored early off of an assist from Dunn for Catholic after Alexis Bosilovic won the opening draw. Brophy set up Brandenburg for her first goal of the game at 23:25, however Drew answered back each time for a 2-2 tie at 16:18.

CUA went on a 3-0 run on goals from Jenna Van Middelem, Laitner, and Brophy before the Rangers connected on back to back free position shots for a 5-4 score at 5:50.

Madeline Wilson scored two goals of her own less than two minutes apart and Laitner added another before the halftime horn for a 8-5 lead at the intermission.

The Cardinals would continue to push early in the second half as Schmitzer and Brophy teamed up just 1:02 into the action for four goal lead. The Rangers would cut the deficit to two goals before Catholic went on its run to close out the game.

It was a story of the hot hands as Brandenburg and Laitner scored two straight goals for CUA before Schmitzer went off for three consecutive scores as the Cardinals picked up the 21-11 win.

Defensively, Dunn, Caroline DiBartolomeo, Yasmeen Ajdari, Miranda Altringer, and Brandenburg each had two caused turnovers as the Rangers committed 23 miscues.

Ajdari and Tricia Pehnke combined for the win as Ajdari recorded two saves and Pehnke turned away three Rangers' shots.

For the game, the Cardinals dominated the Rangers in ground balls 32 to 14 and swarmed in the midfield to deny Drew of transition chances. CUA was successful on 14 of 15 clear attempts, while Drew was just 13 of 23.

Prior to the start of the game, CUA seniors Ajdari and Theresa Ciletti were recognized for the contributions to the Catholic women's lacrosse program which includes two Landmark Conference Championships and 50 career wins.

With today's win, the Cardinals lock up the No. 1 seed in next week's Landmark Tournament and will host No. 4 Scranton on Wednesday, April 30.
