WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team kicked off their annual Spring Break trip with a Sunday afternoon 21-7 victory over the Guilford College Quakers, March 8, in Greensboro, N.C.
The victory brings Catholic University to 2-0 on the season while Guilford drops to a 1-2 over-all record.
The CUA scoring run began as Anna Stumme fired the ball into the goal off a pass from Madeline Wilson just 28 seconds after taking the turf. Lindsay Brophy and Stumme each converted free position attempts with the next two minutes to help the Cards to an early 3-0 lead.
As the Cards continued to play strong on the offensive and defense end, head coach Meghan McDonogh was able to utilize the entire bench. Over the sixty minutes of play CUA had 12 different goal scorers.
CUA's Nicolette Crisalli grabbed a hat-trick in the first half, scoring three goals within one minute and eighteen seconds. Crisalli earned a free position attempt in the seventh minute (7:15) that she was able to put away with a goal; she followed with a conversation off a pass from Clair Schmitzer at 7:58 and then an unassisted goal at 8:33.
Sarah Washington and Ali Cusack made their career debuts and sent the ball into the goal for back-to-back goals to open the second half for the Cards. Washington later picked up the assist on the final goal of the event, scored by Liz McCooey.
With back-to-back goals in the first half and one off a pass from Emily Merkel in the second, Wilson earned the Cardinals second hat-trick of the day.
In goal Tricia Pehnke picked up the win making 2 saves. Brittany Frizol spent 21:32 minutes between the poles and made 2 saves.
The Cardinals continue the Spring Break training and travel to Glassboro, N.J., to take on Rowan on Thursday, March 12, at 4:00 p.m.
