WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team brought home their third straight victory of the season on March 12, against Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.
The Cardinals struck right away as freshman attack Nicolette Crisalli (Silver Spring, Md. / St. John's) scored off a free position shot just 45 seconds into the game. Sophomore midfielder Ana Brandenburg (Edgewater, Md. / Annapolis) scored one minute later with an assist by senior attack Lindsay Brophy (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial), putting the Cardinals up 2-0 in the first two minutes of the game. Brophy struck twice in the 7th minute, increasing the Cardinals 4-0 before Rowan finally put themselves on the board.
Ahead 4-2, the Cardinals scored six straight goals in the first half to advance their lead. Brophy scored her third of the day in the 18:39 minute mark, and continued on to assist Crisalli's second at 13:29. Sophomore attack middie Laura Dunn (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) scored, assisted by sophomore midfielder Clair Schmitzer (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta). Schmitzer then scored to further the Cardinal lead 8-2. Sophomore middie Anna Stumme (Millersville, Md. / Seton Keough) put the Cardinals up 9-2, with senior defender Kathryn Burton (Falmouth, Mass. / Falmouth) making an even 10. Crisalli and Stumme scored before the half to give the Cardinals a promising 12-4 lead.
The game took a turn in the second half, as both teams fought hard for possession and scoring opportunities. The teams went back and forth, Rowan managing to score six goals in the second half. Luckily for the Cardinals, their efforts were too little too late.
Catholic scored eight in the second half, maintaining their steady lead with ease. Brophy reeled in two more goals, totaling five on the day with two assists. Within 20 seconds of Brophy's fifth goal, senior attack Madeline Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y. / Pearl River) sent one into the cage.
Schmitzer earned her second goal off a free position shot with just under 22 minutes to play in the game. Sophomore middie Alexis Bosilovic (Gibsonia, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) scored two goals in the second half, one unassisted and the other assisted by senior defenseman Tori Neill (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern).
The Cardinals claimed an 18-10 win over the Profs, giving them a 3-0 record in the early stages of their 2015 season.
Senior goalie Tricia Pehnke (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro North) made nine saves on the day, matching her season high against Salisbury on Feb. 28. The Cardinals also recorded a season high 32 ground balls on the day, and hope to keep the momentum going.
