No. 15 Catholic Tops Christopher Newport, 18-11

Newport News, Va. - No. 15 The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team topped Christopher Newport University 18-11 on Saturday afternoon.

Catholic juniors Megan Ellis, Erin Dugan and Jessica Lyons lit up the field and guided the Cardinals to the weekend victory. Ellis racked up seven goals and three assists while Dugan won eight draw controls and caused four turnovers. Lyons registered two goals of her own and won five draw controls with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Junior Christina De Cesaris and sophomore Nanci Hernandez split time guarding the cage for the Cardinals. De Cesaris made two a saves and recorded her first win of the season while Hernandez recorded five saves.

Catholic worked quick and got on the scoreboard in the first 20 seconds of play with a shot from sophomore Holly Regan, assisted by Ellis. Ellis scored solo next before Regan sent her a pass to her for her second goal of the day.

Catholic led 3-1 before the 10-minute mark. Sophomore Ally Criscuolo increased the Cardinals tally to four goals before the Captains went on a 3-0 run to tie the contest.

With under 12 minutes to play in the first half, sophomore Julia Clementi capitalized on a free position shot before junior Molly Kelly notched an unassisted goal which put the Cardinals ahead 6-4. CNU scored once more in the half followed by a six-goal run from Catholic to take a significate 12-5 advantage at the half.

Following the break, the Ellis-Regan duo struck again in the first 20 seconds as Ellis made the goals off an assist from Regan. The Captains answered with two scores but Ellis and Lyons registered back-to-back unassisted goals to keep the Cardinals on top (15-7).

Christopher Newport rookie Catherine Leighty scored three goals in the final 23 minutes of the game with fourth CNU goal from junior Sarah Culver. With the Catholic victory in sight, Ellis added one more and sophomore Wendy El scored twice, including on a free position opportunity as the clock expired.

The No. 15 Cardinals return to the nation's capital to host Meredith on Thursday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m.
