WASHINGTON - No. 11 The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team fell 19-18 to Rowan University at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals had seven different goals scorers in the 37-goal contest including three from rookie Anna Maupin who also won three draw controls and caused three turnovers. Senior Nicolette Crisalli led Catholic with six goals while junior Jessica Lyons scored four.
Freshman Michelle Brencher won a team-high eight draw controls as Lyons won six and scooped up three ground balls.
The Cardinals outshot the Profs 38-32 and won 22-of-39 draw controls throughout the game but Rowan was able to capitalize on 9-of-14 eight-meter penalties.
Catholic took the lead early with back-to-back goals from Crisalli and sophomore Holly Regan. Rowan answered with three completed free position attempts to take a 3-2 advantage. The Cardinals and Profs went goal-for-goal with scores from Crisalli, Lyons and Maupin to bring the game a five apiece with under 13 minutes to play in the first half.
Rowan closed out the half on a 6-2 run to take an 11-7 lead at the break.
Catholic closed the gap in the opening minutes of the second half with three unanswered goals from Crisalli, Lyons and sophomore Julia Clementi.
The Cardinals added eight additional goals in the second half and the Profs secured eight of their own to stay on top at the final horn.
Up next, the nationally ranked Cardinals are set to take on No. 15 Cortland State in a neutral site game at the USL Headquarters in Sparks, Md., on Wednesday, March 14 at 4 p.m.
