WASHINGTON - No. 22 The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team brought down No. 5 York College of Pennsylvania, 14-13, in an offensive battle at Cardinal Stadium Tuesday night.
Catholic senior Nicolette Crisalli led the way for the Cardinals with six goals including 3-of-3 eight-meter conversions while sophomore Holly Regan collected five points on two goals and three assists.
Sophomore goalie Nanci Hernandez made double-digit stops during the event to register 11 saves as she scooped up four ground balls. Junior Erin Dugan won six Catholic draw controls and rookie Emily Bynoe won four.
Regan helped the Cardinals to a quick start with back-to-back assists on goals from junior Megan Ellis and freshman Anna Maupin in the in opening three minutes. The Spartans rebutted with two of their own to tie the game by the five-minute mark.
The nationally-ranked opponents went score-for-score over the remaining 25 minutes, with Catholic goals from Crisalli (four) and Regan (one), to reach a 7-7 decision at the halftime intermission.
The Spartans struck first following the break but the Cardinals answered with a 7-1 run to take a 14-9 lead with under 12 minutes on the game clock.
Crisalli started the run, which tied the game at eight. Ellis followed with a completed a free position shot before sophomore Ally Criscuolo fired the ball into the cage for back-to-back points. Regan and Crisalli each put one more between the pipes before sophomore Julia Clementi rounded out the Catholic scoring.
York rallied with four goals in the final minutes but came up short as Catholic charged the turf on the final buzzer.
The No. 22 Cardinals, now 5-4, are set to host Scranton University on Thursday, March 29 in a Landmark Conference matchup at 12 p.m.
