Glassboro, N.J. — The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team rolled to a 23-10 NCAA First Round victory on Saturday afternoon. The No. 14 nationally-ranked Cardinals defeated Johnson & Wales (R.I.) to advance to a Second Round matchup tomorrow at 1 p.m., against host and No. 21-ranked Rowan University.
Catholic scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back. The Cards outshot the Wildcats, 35-31, won 27-of-34 draw controls and converted on seven free position attempts to just two for JWU.
Sophomore attack Holly Regan led the way for the Cardinals as she posted game-highs with eight points, four goals and four assists.
The Cards had three runs of three-or-more goals in the first half as Regan started the second with her first of the afternoon before making it three-straight to start a 6-0 Catholic run that made it a 12-3 game with just under seven minutes to play in the first half.
Catholic also got an impressive performance from junior Jessica Lyons who won 11 draw controls and added a hat trick of her own, ripping three into the back of the cage.
Junior Megan Ellis had a four-point afternoon with three goals and an assist as she was four players with at least a hat-trick. She was joined by senior Nicolette Crisalli with a triple-score performance.
Rookies Kate Behlen, Anna Maupin (two goals, one assist each) and Sydney Hartman (two goals), as well as sophomores Ally Criscuolo (one goal, one assist) and Julia Clementi (two goals) made it nine Cardinals with multi-point days.
Catholic is now set for a rematch against Rowan, who they played earlier this season. The two teams squared off at Cardinal Stadium in just the fifth game of the season, with the Profs coming away with a one-goal win, 19-18.
