Catholic Upsets #16 Goucher, 9-7

WASHINGTON (March 31, 2005) - The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team upset Goucher College, ranked 16th in Division III by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, 9-7 at DuFour Field.

The win, which cuts short Goucher's three-game winning streak and knocks the team from second place in the Capital Athletic Conference, pushes CUA's record to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the CAC. Goucher stands at 4-4, 3-2 CAC.

The Cardinals' leading goal scorer Jaclyn Seward opened up the game in less than a minute on an assist from Christine Thornton. The team wracked up three more goals before Goucher's Ashley Snyder found the net for the Gophers. CUA led 5-2 at halftime.

In the second half, Goucher unleashed a steady offensive attack tying the game at 5-5. But at 23:48, Cardinal co-captain Thornton secured the lead with an assist from Krista Piotrowski. CUA followed up by adding three more points, which proved too much for the Gophers. They would add their final two in the last four minutes of the game.

Of the six players who scored for Catholic, Courtney Murray had three, Seward two, and Kristin Wisniewski, Marissa Schaffer, Monica Manco and Thornton claimed one apiece.

Next up for the Cardinals is a home contest April 3 against Roanoke College.
