Murray notches four goals on the day

WASHINGTON - Senior Courtney Murray (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Maria) scored four goals but it wasn't enough for the Catholic University women's lacrosse team (3-2, 1-1 CAC) to take down the #5 Salisbury Sea Gulls (6-0, 3-0 CAC).  The Cardinals lost 18-9 facing their second ranked opponent of the week.  Despite the loss the Cards came away with some moral victories as they scored on the Sea Gulls more than any other team this season and held Salisbury to a season-low 18 goals.

The Sea Gulls put on a shooting clinic in the first half scoring 12 goals in 30 minutes of play.  Salisbury was up 3-0 before CUA got on the board as Murray connected on her first tally of the day.  The Cards allowed four more Sea Gull goals before Murray managed another unassisted score.  Salisbury closed out the half with a 5-0 run making the score 12-2 at the break.

The Cards looked poised for a comeback to start the second period as Jessie Euler (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) hit a free position shot at 29:38 and then assisted on a goal by senior Jackie Seward (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) at 24:19.  CUA scored six times in the second half including two more from Murray but were unable to overcome the early Sea Gull lead.  At the final horn Salisbury took the 19-8 win.

Murray led CUA on offense with her four goals while Stephanie Shores was the leader for the Sea Gulls with as many.  The Cardinal defense was led by junior Caitlin O'Neill (Germantown, Md./Holy Child) who had nine groundballs and six caused turnovers for the game.  After a sluggish first half CUA tied Salisbury in shots and had more ground balls as well as fewer turnovers in the second.  Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) took the loss for CUA despite 12 saves.

The Cards will travel to future Landmark Conference foe, Susquehanna, on Wednesday for a game beginning at 6:00 p.m.
