Cards Win Season Opener 13-11
Second half surge propels CUA over Dickinson

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of American women's lacrosse squad (1-0) defeated the Dickinson College Red Devils (0-1) Wednesday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium in both squads' first contest of the season.  The 13-11 victory was especially significant for the Cards who have not won their first game of the season since 2002.

The squads kept it even in the first half as they traded goals without either team gaining a major advantage on the offensive end of the field.  Freshman Meghan Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif./Louisville) scored less than two minutes in to mark her first career goal and the first of the season for the Cards.  Dickinson answered immediately but Sabo took the ball down the field and found the back of the cage once more to go ahead.  The Cardinals went ahead by as much as two goals but the Red Devils fought back and took the lead at 3:43.  With just seconds left in the first, the clocked stopped as the ball had left the playing field and CUA had one last chance.  With a second remaining Becky Borrell (Oreland, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) fired from the middle of the crease to tie it up a seven at the break.

The Cards came out in the second and knocked down a pair of quick goals by Laura Haring (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) and Lauren Sheils (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding).  Sunnie Ko got one back but soon after Katie Bitonti  (North Potomac, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Jackie Lodge (Bethesda, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) added two more to give CUA an advantage.  After Ko's second score in the half the Cards continued their run of pairs with two from Bitonti and Sheils making the CUA lead four goals.  Despite Dickinson's effort they couldn't make up the deficit and the Cardinal defense held strong for the 13-11 victory.

Bitonti, Sabo and Sheils each scored four points to lead the Cards with Bitonti leading the way with four goals.  Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) added a team-high three assists for the Cardinals and tied for the top position in ground balls with three.  Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic ) was credited with the win in goal playing all 60 minutes with 11 saves, Caitlin Kingsley took the loss for Goucher.

The Cardinals will take it on the road next week as they travel south for spring break.  CUA will face Greensboro on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
