CUA finishes conference season undefeated

WASHINGTON - The #17 Catholic University women's lacrosse team (13-4, 5-0 Landmark Conference) lived up to its top preseason Landmark Conference ranking Saturday with a 19-5 win over the Drew University Rangers (9-6, 3-2 Landmark).  The game pitted the second place Rangers against the first place Cards who now finish the season undefeated with the number one seed in the Landmark Tournament which starts on Wednesday.

The Cardinals got on the board first after Caroline Taltavull (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) controlled the ball during a scrambled in front goal and as she regained her footing she shot it past the keeper to make it 1-0.  Christina Rogers (Monmouth Beach, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) made it two hitting from close range off of a pass from Katie Buonpastore (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) who was behind the goal.  Sophomore Kate Robinson's (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) free position shot made it 3-0 and right off of the draw control Kate Narzikul (Philadelphia, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) came down and scored another.  Drew finally found the back of the net at 17:59 but once again CUA came down and scored on the draw notching Buonpastore's second of the day.

The Cards continued the scoring barrage with Kelly Ryan (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) weaving in at 16:20 which was followed by Buonpastore's third off of the draw.  CUA staged a nice little free position play on the next goal with Caitlin O'Neill hitting Laura Haring right next to the net to make it 8-1.  The goals kept coming as Lauren Sheils (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) got into the act midway through the half scoring two in a row before the Rangers could answer again with a shot at 8:02.  However, before the end of the half both CUA and Drew managed one more each to make it 11-3 at the break.

Less than forty seconds into the second half, Robinson sparked CUA with a laser past the keeper off of a free position shot. Caitlin O'Neill then made a move past a defender to make the advantage ten as the clock began to run.  Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic) added her first of the game off of a Robinson assist near the 20 minute mark as the Cards just kept on scoring.  Robinson then converted off of a nice pass from Buonpastore at the 18 minute mark as things kept rolling at 15-3.  CUA managed four goals and Drew two in the final fifteen minutes making the final 19-5.

Robinson led CUA in scoring with three goals while four others notched two, Robinson also had five assists in the game while Buonpastore and Haring each had two.  The Cards out shot the Rangers 34-17 and had five more ground balls while dominating offensive play.  In goal, CUA keeper Melissa Brashear had 10 saves on the day.

The Cardinals begin the Landmark Conference tournament on Wednesday and will host the fourth seed, Susquehanna University, in the tourney.
