Sea Gulls Slip Past Cards, 16-7
SALISBURY, Md.- The No. 10 Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team fell to third ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls in Salisbury, Md., Saturday afternoon 16-7. With the loss, CUA drops to 1-1 on the year, while SU improves to 5-0.
Laura Haring led the Cards with two goals on the night, while also dishing out one assist. Kate Robinson, Mary Swarthout, Kate Narzikul, Caroline Taltavull, and Lauren Bernstein rounded out the scoring for CUA, as each tallied one goal apiece. Swarthout and teammate Katie Buonpastore also added assists for the Cards.
The trio of Swarthout, Haring, and Meghan Murray added a defensive component for the squad, as the three combined for 10 caused turnovers (4, 3, and 3, respectively). Murray also chipped in two groundballs. Goaltender Melissa Brashear finished the night with three saves and two groundballs in the net.
Salisbury jumped out to an early lead, but a goal by Robinson would tie things up by converting off a free position shot just minutes into the game. SU then went on a 6-1 run for the next twenty minutes that left CUA down 7-2. Back-to-back goals by Haring and Swarthout brought the Cards within three, but the Sea Gulls would score two goals of their own before the end of the first period.
Catholic hit the ground running in the second half. Haring connected with Narzikul to bring the score to 9-5, and then recorded her own goal just a few minutes later. Salisbury kept up their offensive attack, however, outscoring the Cards 7-1 in the final minutes of the game.
CUA will look to get back to their winning ways as they take on Gettysburg College in San Antonio, TX March 11th. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
