Borrell, Swarthout Earn All-American Honors
WASHINGTON- CUA student-athletes Becky Borrell and Mary Swarthout have been named to the IWLCA All-America Third Team after their efforts on the lacrosse field this season.
Becky Borrell helped mold the Cardinals into one of the toughest defensive teams in the region this year. The junior played and started in all 20 games for CUA, and led the team with 32 caused turnovers. She scooped up 49 ground balls and added 11 draw controls, one goal, and two assists in her junior campaign. Borrell was also named to the First Team All-Landmark and First Team All-Chesapeake Region for her efforts.
This season, sophomore Mary Swarthout led the team in points (58), draw controls (52), and ground balls (47) this year. She finished the season first in the Landmark for free position goals, third in assists and total points, and fourth in overall scoring. The attacker also earned Landmark Conference Player of the Year honors, and was named to the First Team All-Chesapeake Region.
It is the first time in program history that the women's lacrosse team has had two members named to the IWLCA All-America team in the same year. Borrell and Swarthout are the fourth and fifth players to be awarded with the prestigious honor. Other honorees include Kate Robinson (1st Team, 2009; 3rd Team, 2008), Christine Thorton (3rd Team, 2005), and Kristen Ambrosetti (Honorable Mention, 2000).
The IWLCA honored 48 student-athletes in Division III with a selection on one of the All-Regional teams for 2010. The organization will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on June 12, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
