Cardinals march on after downing Goucher 19-9 in semifinals

WASHINGTON – For the fourth straight year CUA will play for the Landmark Conference championship after the Cardinals handled Goucher 19-9 on Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of the conference tournament.  Kate Robinson, Mary Swarthout and Meghan Brady scored four times apiece for CUA and Katie Buonpastore handed out a game-high five assists to lead the Cardinals to their fifth straight win.

A Goucher goal by Colleen Cole gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead, but it was short-lived as CUA ran off the next six scores to jump ahead by five.  Robinson scored twice during the run and Lindsay Davenport, Brady, Swarthout and Theresa Ciletti each scored once.

Melissa Zimmerman finally put a stop to CUA's scoring with a goal with 12:13 to play before halftime, but the Cardinals answered with four straight to take a commanding 10-2 lead into intermission.

Swarthout and Robinson scored once during the 4-0 spurt and Brady twice.

Hannah Khin opened the second half scoring with a goal 45 seconds in to cut CUA's lead to seven, but from there the Cardinals reeled off five scores in a row to open up a 15-3 advantage.  Swarthout and Brady scored once and Chelsea Gleason netted three scores in a span of less than four minutes to help CUA build its 12-goal cushion.

A goal by Davenport with 15:24 on the clock was sandwiched between a pair of Gopher goals, but Erin Fowler, Robinson and Swarthout scored three straight times for the Cardinals as they went ahead 19-5 with 8:43 to play.

Goucher scored the game's last four goals to make the final margin ten, but CUA had this one in control from start to finish.

The Cardinals defense did a great job of all afternoon long, harassing the Gophers into 22 turnovers and a 12 of 19 showing in clear attempts.  Robinson caused four of those turnovers, including several where she picked passes off on clear attempts, and Gormley caused three.

Swarthout picked up a team-leading five ground balls for the Cardinals, and Kate and Mary Robinson were the team leaders in draw controls with five each.

Gabby Sena started in goal and sent back eight shots before giving way to Yasmeen Aldari, who made two saves in nearly ten minutes of action.

Goucher, which suited up only 12 players for the game, received four goals from Khin and two from Cole.  Ashley Shaner was challenged continually by CUA's high-powered offense, and she made 18 saves during the game.

CUA will now take on Drew, a 10-8 winner over Scranton in the second conference tournament semifinal, on Saturday in the 2011 Landmark Conference championship game inside Cardinal Stadium.  Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.

The two teams played earlier this season with CUA coming away with a 10-9 victory in Madison, New Jersey on April 2.
