Cardinals Take Second Place at Head of the Occoquan

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. - Returning to the site of its first-ever competition, the Catholic University women's rowing team finished second in the women's novice eight on Saturday at the Head of the Occoquan in a competition that featured several top teams.

"The Head of the Occoquan was a much bigger race than our first one with several Division I teams in our events," said head coach Katie O'Driscoll. "This was the same venue as our first race so the coxswains had the opportunity to race the course before which is a great advantage."

The Cardinals, coxed by freshman Anna Paviglianiti and stroked by freshman Emily Chase, finished second in a time of 19:11.01 which trailed only Georgetown's first eight and was just ahead of the Hoyas' second eight who crossed the line in 19:12.54. Paviglianiti and Chase also led Catholic to a first-place showing at the Occoquan Chase on October 14.

Catholic's time was an improvement over its season-opening time of 20:50.24.

The women's 8+ competition featured fellow Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) rival St. Mary's College of Maryland as well as George Mason, Loyola Maryland, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Penn State from Division I. St. Mary's (Md.) finished 12th with a time of 21:46.07.
