CUA falls to Gettysburg 1-0 on late goal

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Cardinals fell to Gettysburg on Wednesday afternoon by a 1-0 score.  The Bullets' Tara Crowley netted the game-winner in the 86th minute off a rebound of her own shot to improve Gettysburg to 3-1 on the season.

Gettysburg's Rachel West took the first shot of the afternoon at the 3:06 mark of the opening half, and it was high.

Lauren Schapiro took two straight straights for the Bullets midway through the half, and CUA blocked the first attempt before the second went wide.

Near the end of the half, Gettysburg had two chances, but CUA's defense was up to the challenge, blocking one shot and Lexi Halperin made a diving save on the other to preserve the scoreless tie.

Just after the second half began, West took a shot for the Bullets, but Halperin was there for the save again.

Soon after, Mary McGann took CUA's first shot of the day, but it was wide left.

Another Bullets shot, this one coming at the 51:37 mark by Mary Kamovitch, was turned back by Halperin, and the score remained 0-0.

McGann tried her hand again at the 60:33 mark, but again her shot was wide.

One minute later, Kelly Henderson looked to put CUA on the board but Bullets' goalkeeper Eliza Gray made the save.

A shot by Gettysburg's Tobi Gloss with 25 minutes remaining was blocked by the CUA defense, as the Cardinals continued to make things difficult for the Bullets.

With just over 10 minutes to play, Halperin made yet another save for CUA, turning back Lauren Schapiro.

Gettysburg was finally able to break the scoreless tie when Crowley followed up her own shot, which was blocked, with her first goal of the season.

CUA still had four minutes left to try and tie things up, but the Cardinals were unable to pull even.

Gettysburg finished with a 21-3 advantage in shots, but CUA's defense played terrific all afternoon, keeping the Cardinals in it throughout.  Halperin totaled six saves in the match and Gray finished with one save for the home team.

CUA is back in action on Sunday afternoon when the Cardinals welcome Christopher Newport to town.  Start time is set for 1 p.m.
