CUA heads to Pa. for Landmark Conference Tournament this weekend

WASHINGTON – Following a slow start to the 2012 season, the CUA women's soccer team regrouped and will now get the chance to compete for a conference championship.  The Cardinals, unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches, travel to Scranton, Pa. this weekend for the conference tournament, which gets underway on Saturday.

After an up-and-down month of September, Head Coach JP Sousa's squad rebounded nicely during the month of October, dropping just one match against four wins and a pair of ties.

CUA averaged less than a goal per match during September (0.40), but once the calendar turned to October, the Cardinals offense came to life, averaging nearly three goals per match (2.86).

Regina Zolbrod, Kaylre Greaves, and Lauren Cadott are CUA's top goal scorers with four apiece, while Mary McGann, Ellen Jansen and Kirsten Wosleger have added two each.

Defensively, CUA has allowed only 1.2 goals per match, which places the Cardinals third in the Landmark Conference.  Six times this season CUA has kept its opponent off the board completely, with freshman Lexi Halperin stopping 85 shots in over 1,500 minutes of action in goal on the year.

CUA's semifinal opponent is the University of Scranton, which claimed the top seed in the tournament by virtue of its 4-0-2 conference mark.  The Cardinals and Royals played one another just two weeks ago, battling to a 0-0 draw in double overtime in Washington.

Samantha Russo and Gianna Vitolo lead the Royals with four goals apiece, while Kelsy McAnelly has played all 1715 minutes in goal and made 57 saves during that time.

Friday's semifinal tilt between No. 4 CUA and top-seeded Scranton begins at 11 a.m. in Pennsylvania.  No. 3 Drew and No. 2 Moravian meet later in the day in the second semifinal, with the pair of winners then facing off on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Scranton.

This marks the fifth time CUA has earned a Landmark Conference Tournament berth.  The Cardinals are 4-3 in their previous four appearances, advancing to three conference championships, and winning the 2009 title.  CUA and Scranton faced one another in last year's championship match.

Scranton will offer live video and stats of each tournament game this weekend.
