Cardinals Earns Second Shutout Win Of The Year Over Mount St. Mary (N.Y.)

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over the visiting Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) in the opening day of the D.C. Classic in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The Lady Cardinals took some time to settle into the game as MSM maintained possession of the ball in Cardinal territory from the beginning of the match. Although they did not connect on any attempts, the Knights kept the pressure on the CUA back line, firing off six shots in the first stanza. Shanice Robe (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) ripped a shot past Lexi Halperin (River Vale, N.J./Pasack Valley), but the goalpost denied her of a goal.

"We really had to find ourselves, we made a couple adjustments to try to keep it simple" said CUA women's soccer coach J.P. Sousa.

Midway through the first half, the red and black settled down and was able to convert on its first shot of the day as senior defender Noelle Arcomano (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) made her way up field where she took a pass from Annie Langley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and drilled a shot from 30 yards out past the outstretched hands of the MSM goalie. The Cardinals kept the 1-0 advantage leading into halftime.

Catholic commenced the second half firing on all cylinders and created several scoring opportunities. Lindsay Aleman (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Friends) had a golden opportunity denied but Kate Masson (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) was there to clean up the rebound and finish for the Cardinal's second goal of the day.

"The second half we came into our own and moved the ball around more and played with more confidence. It was a lot cleaner in the midfield" said Sousa.

Halperin picked up her third win of the season in goal, and second shutout. She registered 9 saves in the victory.

The Cardinals (3-0) return to action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. for the final game of the D.C. Classic against Richard Stockton (2-2). The Ospreys were 2-0 winners over Wilkes University in the second game of the opening day.
