Catholic Overpowers Washington Adventist

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's soccer team dominated Washington Adventist University on Thursday, Oct. 17, picking up a 7-0 non-conference win in Washington, D.C.

The Cardinals got on the board early and never looked back en route to their fourth straight win, improving to 9-6 on the season, while the Shock drop to 2-10.

Junior Kaylre Greaves (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) started the scoring for Catholic, when Alexis Garcia (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach Senior) threaded a pass from midfield through the Shock's backline setting up a 1-vs-1 opportunity for Greaves. The keeper came off her line but Greaves was able to get past her for the first goal of the game at the 8:47 mark.

As they have several times this season, the Cardinals did not settle after their initial score, instead continuing to attack deep into Shock territory. Just 31 seconds later, Kate Masson (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) crossed a ball into the 18-yard box from the right flank as Garcia was there to collect the pass and finish a shot for a 2-0 Catholic lead.

The quick two goals would be it for the half, as CUA went into the intermission up 2-0.

Catholic wasted no time getting into the flow of the second half, as Alexa Tsaganos (Kennett Square, Pa./Archmere Academy) crossed a perfectly placed ball deep into the box for Kelly Henderson (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) to one-touch a shot past the Shock keeper for her first goal of the season with 45:50 on the clock.

Kirsten Wosleger (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored her first goal of the season as well, sending home a pass from Alyssa Fiore (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) in the 54th minute for a 4-0 CUA lead.

Henderson picked up her second goal of the game, ripping an unassisted shot from the top of the goal box past Lucia Cortes just five minutes later.

For her second assist of the game, Fiore set up Lindsay Aleman (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Friends) off of a corner kick by Ava Brown (Fairfax Station, Va./Paul VI).

Annie Langley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) headed a clear attempt back into the Shock defense, setting up Aleman for her second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, for the final score of the game with 76:35 on the clock.

Lexi Halperin (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) and Amy-Lynn Friel (Westampton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) split the goalkeeping duties for the Cardinals, each playing a half. Neither keeper had to make a save, as the Cardinals dominated the Shock in time of possession and denied Washington Adventist of any shots on goal for the entire game. Their counterpart, Cortes, made 13 saves for the Shock.

The Cardinals return to the pitch for Landmark Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 23 when they travel to Towson, Md. to play Goucher in a night game scheduled to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
