WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Goucher College on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in Towson, Md.
The loss snaps the Cardinal's four-game win streak as CUA drops to 9-7 on the season and 2-2 in Landmark Conference action. Meanwhile, the Gophers picked up their first Landmark win of the season, improving to 1-3 in conference, and 5-9-1 for the year.
The Cardinals got off to a slow start and were unable to find the back of the net for the first time in four games. CUA was only able to fire off one shot in the first half as the teams headed into the intermission tied at 0-0.
Midway through the second half, K. Matthew-Parker stole an errant pass from the Catholic backline and ripped a shot past Lexi Halperin to put Goucher up 1-0 with 62:55 on the clock.
The Cardinals finally started playing with some urgency in the last 20 minutes of the game but their efforts were not enough. CUA outshot Goucher 8-to-4 in the second half and had two corner kick opportunities, but they were unable to capitalize on any of their chances.
Catholic is currently in a three-way tie for third place in the Landmark standings with Juniata and Moravian. With only two games left to play in the regular season, the Cardinals are fighting to claim a spot in the four-team conference playoff. The Cardinals face Juniata on Saturday, Oct. 26, then will travel to second-place Scranton in the season finale on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The Cardinals return to action this Saturday, Oct. 26 against Juniata for Senior Day, scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
