Catholic Women’s Soccer Concludes Season Opener with 2-1 Win

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Catholic University of America women's soccer team walked away undefeated on the weekend with a 2-1 win over Farmingdale State, the host of the two-day Rams Classic in Farmingdale, N.Y.

"Today's game was different than yesterday's," said Catholic Head Women's Soccer Coach J.P. Sousa.  "We came out flat and allowed a goal in the first two minutes of play."

FSU was first on the board, as the Rams' Shannon Murphy scored a header off of a throw in from Andrea Kiefer.

The Cards responded immediately with a goal within 48-seconds, Kaylre Greaves finished a pass from Alyssa Fiore to tie the contest 1-1.

"Scoring in the third minute seemed to settle everyone down and we could play our game from there on," said Sousa.

CUA opened the second half of play with a few substitutions and a more offensively driven formation.

"The subs and the formation changes allowed better ball control and helped our forwards find freedom on the field," said Sousa.

Catholic's Caroline Hopkins scored the game-wining goal, looping the ball over the goalkeeper's outstretched arms on a shot from the corner of the penalty box.

"We probably had a nice string of 7 or 8 passes before the ball popped out to 'Cam' after a rebound. She put the ball exactly where it needed to be to score the goal," said Sousa.

The Cardinals dominated the Rams in shots, limiting Farmingdale State to four shots in the second half.  CUA finished with a 14 to 11 advantage in shots.

Lexi Halperin recorded her second win in the net with three saves.

CUA return home for their official home opener on Wednesday, September 3 against Hood.  The 7:00 p.m. contest will take place on the turf at the CUA Stadium.
